Until his final illness, Gerald was consistently thoughtful, funny, and gracious. The was never a time that I called him that he didn't ask how my wife is. He never fumbled for her name or said "best regards to your wife". He knew her name off the top of his head. That clarity, along with his recollections of being a flight surgeon or practicing medicine in Louisiana, delivered with that lovely Southern drawl, are memories I will cherish. I'd like to think he and his beloved Elaine are reunited, perhaps sitting on a park bench, holding hands.
