Obituary of Gordon Hutchinson
Gordon Lee Hutchinson, 80, of Fort Collins passed away peacefully on April 16, surrounded by his family. He was born February 6, 1943, as the second of three children to Clyde and Margaret Hutchinson in Yuma Colorado.
Gordon graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelor’s degree in 1965 and then with a master’s degree in 1967. He completed his education with a PhD from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1969.
Gordon married his high school sweetheart, Ilene Derry, in June 1962. They moved to Fort Collins where they spent most of their lives. Together, Gordon and Ilene raised three children, Stuart, Angela and Shane.
Gordon enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a soil scientist for the United States Department of Agriculture. Over his career, he published many peer-reviewed papers and presented his findings at conferences around the world.
Gordon was an avid woodworker, gardener and handyman. He and Ilene enjoyed spending time at their Chrystal Lakes cabin where they hiked, relaxed and had an ongoing game of scrabble.
Gordon is survived by Ilene, son Stuart, daughter Angela and grandchildren, Azur, Enzo, Evan and Quinn. He is preceded in death by his son Shane, his parents and siblings, Clyde and Jean.
This kind and honorable man has departed from this Earth after having a tremendous influence on all those that knew him. A small, private ceremony will occur on Friday, April 21.
