Obituary of Winfield Jesse Bassage

Winfield Jesse Bassage completed his life of adventure August 27, 2023.

Winfield held a variety of jobs over his life, but was most proud of his time teaching, whether math in a school or as a Boy Scout leader and lifelong example to all who joined in his many outdoor adventures on foot or water. He explored all of the trails in Lory State Park as well as many trails along Poudre Canyon. An avid runner and member of the Fort Collins Running club, Win completed countless 5k races and competed in the 2019 Senior Games in Alberquerque, NM, posting the fastest time of anyone his age or older. He enjoyed being a course marshal for the Horsetooth Half Marathon and in 2022 he was the oldest participant in the Fort Collins, CO Firecracker 5k at 92 years old.

Despite losing his right arm in a barn collapse at the age of 15, Winfield was determined to make the most of what opportunities he had, completing his Boy Scout Eagle requirements, learning to fly, ski, kayak, canoe, hit a baseball, do woodwork, and perform complicated car repairs and other tasks that would have been a challenge to someone with two hands.  His patience and persistence served him well and inspired all who knew him.

Born July 17, 1930 to Albert and Leona Bassage in Sayre, PA, Winfield was preceded in death by his sisters Mary, Doris, and Luella and his beloved wife of 61 years, Carolyn. He is survived by son David, daughter Leslie, grandchildren Robin and Amber, and great grandson August.
